Company E, 158th Infantry 1941

Picked this up over the weekend. Very pleased whenever I can find 158th items. Picture is captioned " Camp Barkeley, Texas - March 8, 1941 Capt. H.R. Merchant Com'd'g "

 

This was taken before they 158th was sent to Panama. Interestingly, they were not yet known as the "Bushmasters", as they would take that name in Panama. This early on in the war, most (if not all) of the men on the photo are AZ Guardsmen who have been activated into federal service. The 158th as a whole had a high number of Hispanic and Native American soldiers, many of whom can be seen here. Enjoy!
