bryang Posted August 28, 2016 Share #1 Posted August 28, 2016 Knives aren't exactly my area of collecting, however I received this through a friend who deals with flea markets. After doing a cursory search I discovered it to be a Dix knife, without scabbard. I've seen photos of this with and without the red 'spacer.' I believe - my eyes could be wrong - I see what appears to be a faded green painted number on the handle. Almost looks like the number 55. Any idea what this might indicate - issue number? I paid $40 for it, so hopefully I did ok with this. As I don't know much about knives, I'd appreciate any comment/observations. Thanks - Bryan
Charlie Flick Posted August 29, 2016 Share #2 Posted August 29, 2016 Bryang: Nice example of a variant of the DIX knives, about which there is relatively little information available. These were private purchase knives, not USGI. Thus, the meaning of the marking you observed on the handle is more likely related to a price or initials of a former owner. At $40 you did very well. In my experience these blades are somewhat scarce, even with the missing sheath. Regards, Charlie
ccyooper Posted August 30, 2016 Share #3 Posted August 30, 2016 I personally believe these knives were marketed on the west coast to marines. I have owned several over the years and have noticed that when found with the M8 variations of scabbards they are painted with the green color attributed to the USMC. The birds head version are more uncommon. Nice find and thanks for sharing.
