Championhilz Posted August 26, 2016 Share #1 Posted August 26, 2016 I recently picked up this postcard written by Sergeant James M. Doolittle of Louisville, Mississippi, who served in the 98th Bomb Group, 343rd Bomb Squadron. Doolittle was waist gunner on a B-24, serial number 42-64483-S, which was shot down on February 22, 1944, while on a mission to Regensburg, Germany. Championhilz Posted August 26, 2016 Author Share #2 Posted August 26, 2016 I looked through Sergeant Doolittle's hometown newspaper, The Winston County Journal, and found quite a bit of information about his time as a prisoner of war. The first article I found from April 14, 1944, announced that he was a prisoner of war:
Championhilz Posted August 26, 2016 Author Share #3 Posted August 26, 2016 The next article, dated May 12, 1944, was even better, as it included a picture:
Championhilz Posted August 26, 2016 Author Share #4 Posted August 26, 2016 But the best article I found was dated June 15, 1945, after he had been liberated. This article gives a detailed account of his life as a prisoner of war:

sundance Posted August 26, 2016 Share #7 Posted August 26, 2016 Hey I noticed that date also. If you could pick a date to put on your postcard that would probably be it.
Sarge8 Posted August 26, 2016 Share #8 Posted August 26, 2016 Bet the Germans were surprised when they found out they had captured Jimmy Doolittle - oops, wrong one!
