2 Unusual 22nd Armored Patches

One is a lemon apex and the other a Gemsco. Unusual as both of these variations are usually associated with wartime patches. and the 22nd was not activated until 1947.

I have seen a Gemsco 104th patch with an OD border and synthetic return threads! Figure that one out. You will also see post WWII CAP Gemsco patches as well.

A distinct possibility! However, for the Gemsco piece, you can see the loose threads on the numbers match that the rest of the patch. You can tell that they were cut when the patch was made.

The patches are probably wartime made but have had the numbers added post war.

I respectfully disagree. Other forum members have posted similar 22 armored patches. Neither had numbers added after they left the factory

This is quoted from a previous post by Tankpatches:

"Teamski is 100% correct, patches where made for these units

assuming that the army would activate them

When they weren't activated the patches just went to a government warehouse

"for future use"

There's also a wartime made 22nd Armor Division FE and on wool

it was not activated either, when the 22nd Ar Div was activated post war

they were issued the wartime produced patches!

When those stockes were depleted more patches were made, but to the modern standard;

merrowed edge (AGB, & subdued)"

If tank patches is correct this would explain the Gemsco and yellow apex patches.

Gap is 100 % correct the two patches in the original post are war time manufacture.

they were made by an over zealous manufacturer, because in late "42" the army had estimated that they would have to field

up to 25 armored divisions!!

But the fortunes of war turned, and the army didn't have to field all of them

Other Armored patches made but never used 15th, 17th,(also made on wool) 18th, 19th, 21st (used post war)

Hi guys

this one had bugged me which I assumed could of been added post war with increase in AD OR training Div (Korean war), however speaking to several ASMIC members it appears the long stemmed and off centered 2 could of been a result of GEMSCO coming in late to add 22nd AD to is WWII production run and they did this by attempting to alter the punch tape, but as you can see the end result, its off center and either a long stem 2 or shorter 2 a mistake variant and possible production run?

Just ran across this thread.  Here are my war time 22nd AD patches.  Anyone have one of those Gemsco patches for sale, please let me know.

Not a 22nd but a 17th AD by Gemsco. Never activated in WW2 or at any point.

Also a woolie. Corroborates what Tankpatches said.
