Wake1941 Posted August 14, 2016 Share #1 Posted August 14, 2016 Picked this one up and it really has me stumped, it appears to be from the 1930s the two post on the back are acutally threaded, the pin it missing the two screws. I am interested to know when this insignia was used. Thanks

MattS Posted August 14, 2016 Share #3 Posted August 14, 2016 My guess is Army Air Corps flight surgeon (doctors for those on flight status), 1930s. Not sure if was an official BOS insignia, but during WW2 they had their own wings. See: http://www.ww2wings.com/wings/usaaf/usaafflightsurgeon.shtml

KurtA Posted August 14, 2016 Share #5 Posted August 14, 2016 I would say someone took the silver prop off an officer's AAF branch insignia and replaced it with the caduceus from an enlisted AAF branch disk.

Good eye, that is what it looks like.
Wake1941 Posted August 14, 2016 Author Share #7 Posted August 14, 2016 Thank you for your input, on closer inspection you can almost see where the prop was at one time. Interesting that they chose to remove it.
patches Posted August 15, 2016 Share #8 Posted August 15, 2016 Interesting. A Sweetheart Item perhaps? Can't imagine it was worn by an officer on a shirt or as a pair on the lower lapels of a coat, it would be most unauthorized right ?

Without a period photo showing its unauthorized wear, I have to think it was done more recently by someone to make a buck on the collector market. Wake1941 Posted August 16, 2016 Author Share #10 Posted August 16, 2016 I am sure this is not recently done, the wings are older pre-ww2 they actually are both screw back post.
