warguy Posted August 13, 2016 Share #1 Posted August 13, 2016 Picked this up pretty cheap at a recent auction. Pretty salty, no scabard. Looks righteous otherwise, but I am stumped on the tang/pommel. Is this is a configuration anyone else has seen? The two pins have the same patina as the rest of the pommel and appear to have been there forever. Is this an arsenal repair, or were double pins like this used? Any help would be appreciated. jw517 Posted August 13, 2016 Share #2 Posted August 13, 2016 I'd say the pommel has been replaced. The handle may have been worked on. It's not a knife Kabar made exept for the blade I'd say. What I'm saying is it's not original. The pommel is wrong for that Knife.
Charlie Flick Posted August 13, 2016 Share #3 Posted August 13, 2016 That knife has had a field repair. These blades were expendable so there were no "arsenal repairs". The weak point in these early knives was the pommel, which was frequently damaged or knocked off entirely by guys using the knives as hammers to pound in tent stakes and who knows what else. These early knives are often seen with replaced pommels, shortened handles and a variety of other field repairs. HTH. Regards, Charlie
warguy Posted August 13, 2016 Author Share #4 Posted August 13, 2016 Thanks Charlie, the knife in every other aspect meets the criteria of an early K-bar so the field repair makes sense. Thanks again
jw517 Posted August 13, 2016 Share #5 Posted August 13, 2016 Most if not all that early had a thinner pommel. That looks fat.
