Attic Find - Korean War Pictures

When my wife and I moved last year, I found a photograph album in the attic that one of the previous owners left behind. Mixed in with the family photos were these images of George Bond of Clinton, Mississippi, taken when he served in the Korean War.

 

This one is my favorite - George Bond posing by the Freedom Gate Bridge over the Imjin River. The sign reads, "Freedom Gate Bridge, Rebuilt by Company C & Company A, 84th Engr. Const. Bn., 2nd Engr. Const. Gp."

 

 

 

 

In this one, he is wearing an armband that reads, "Port Sec[urity]"

That first picture of Freedom Gate bridge is awesome !

 

The original bridge is STILL in use today but it's now called Freedom bridge ! ! !

 

The photo was taken on the North bank of the Imjin river looking south.. I've been across the actual bridge too many times. There was a rail bridge just to the left of the steel span and the brick pillars remain today.

The rail line still goes right into no mans land in the DMZ and a knocked out engine is still out there.. There are several other bridge remains in the area but they were all destroyed during the war.
