un-marked garand bayonet which appears to be a rework into a fighting knife. was this type of thing done ww2 due to a fighting knife shortage.

These are mods made by the ROK/South Koreans for use on the garands. There were a bunch imported several years ago and typically w/O scabbards

The only ones that I have seen that I am certain of were shortened by South Korea to fit the M8A1 scabbards. I have no record of any other country doing this modification, although that does not mean it could not have happened.

A buddy of mine has one just like this. It's unmarked and I believe the blade is cut down and the mount is cut off aswell. Family story is that his Great-Grandfather cut it down and made it into his theater knife when he was overseas.

THe Korean ones were heavily ground and reshaped from existing bayonets as I understand it and re-parkerized with a thick finnish. The ones I had were a light grey color and even seen some where the meal was pretty pitted and parked over.

These are not rare. They were surplused by the thousands.A odd variant but still readily availale.Last one I had I sold for $25.

I fully concur with Ron, and Gary. These came out of Korea, I bought 3-4 of these years ago for $7 apiece in the wrapper. A few years later I bought the metal covered, cut down scabbards for $5 each. They were ground down like butter knives. All markings removed. But, I do have one with the 1918 date intact. Great for replacement parts. SKIP

here is something I can call a plus to these ROK shorty's---- consider it part of the m-1 garand history in the M-1's life.
