Large WWII Submarine Grouping

3 days ago I received this large WWII submarine grouping from the son of a veteran who served on the USS S-43 prior to WWII, then the USS Skate (SS 305) and the USS Catfish (SS 339) during and through the end of WWII. The grouping is extremely complete from what I can tell. There is quite a bit of paperwork, photos, right of passage certificates, commendation signed by Nimitz, detailed patrol reports. This veteran kept virtually everything. Its a little overwhelming, but is a complete picture of a WWII submariner. The son served in the Navy during the mid to late 60's and during that time one of his duties was to decommission the USS Archerfish (SS 311). From the Archerfish he took and kept two of it's combat Red lights which he also gave me. I did some research and found that the USS Archerfish was responsible for sinking the Japanese aircraft carrier Shinano, the largest warship ever sunk by a submarine. I would think those would be the same red lights they switched on during that battle.

I will post a couple more photos but there is too much to post without making this thread too long. If there are any questions or requests for further photos, please just ask. Thanks for looking.

No such thing, in my opinion, of a thread being too long.

I would like to see a close up of the signal flag, cap tally, the black submarine model, the USS Skate flag and the pictures that go with it.

I think it would be cool to hard wire and mount one of the red lights in a war room. Does anyone else have one?

That is an awesome & complete grouping.I think the SKATE is one of top subs for tonnage sunk, sure that carrier helped. I like the 6, I'm assuming pilots, saved.

That is one awesome group.

If I were rich and could keep stuff I would offer you crazy money for it.

I mean really crazy money.

Love it!

Thank you for the comments. It has been very interesting reading through the detailed accounts of the Skate's war patrols.

Great group and thread. In that crew photo in the whites, can't tell for sure but looks like they are all wearing beards like your guy is in the frame with the Truman picture?
