ngutterman Posted July 21, 2016 Share #1 Posted July 21, 2016 Hi everyone, I am new to the forum and I recently came into possession of my father's collection of militaria. One item in the collection is what I believe to be a Civil War era sword, but I am admittedly not very knowledgeable of items from this era - much less edged weapons! The sword does appear to have been manufactured by W.H. Horstmann & Sons (Philadelphia, PA), has U.S. etched on the blade, and also has an eagle with the inscription "E. Pluribus Unum" etched on the blade. I was hoping that someone in the group might be able to help me identify what it is and if it is potentially a "keeper." I did find similar items on the internet, but nothing so similar to my piece that I was satisfied with the info I had found. Any thoughts you may have would be appreciated! Thanks for your time. MAW Posted July 21, 2016 Share #2 Posted July 21, 2016 Looks like an 1850 foot officer sword.....
SARGE Posted July 22, 2016 Share #3 Posted July 22, 2016 MAW is quite right. It is a US Model 1850 Foot Officer Sword worn by lower ranking officers. Your sword was made/sold by Horstmann and is of the US Civil War time period.
sundance Posted July 23, 2016 Share #4 Posted July 23, 2016 The sword is a beauty. Did it come with a scabbard? What types of militaria did your dad collect?
