bellasilva Posted May 23, 2016 Share #1 Posted May 23, 2016 I found two today at a local antique warehouse, one stamped US MANN 1945, and this one. I can't find a definitive answer on the web other than it possibly being a pre-Spanish American war issue hatchet. If so I'd love to pick it up, unsure of value though. It is currently priced at $40. Also, it is only marked on the metal, no stamps on the handle.
bheskett Posted May 23, 2016 Share #2 Posted May 23, 2016 That is a puzzlement. Any signs of O.D. paint anywhere on the handle or head? the US-91 is kind of strange to me. I assume it matches the size/shape of the other you picked up.
VMI88 Posted May 23, 2016 Share #3 Posted May 23, 2016 Bellasilva, I've seen similarly marked axes but haven't been able to find anything definitive on them. It may well be a US government-purchased item but in my opinion is relatively recent. I have an axe marked "US 95" but it doesn't appear to be very old. bellasilva Posted May 23, 2016 Author Share #4 Posted May 23, 2016 Thanks for the replies, gents. Yes, the 1945 dated hatchet and this one have the same exact shape, although no sign of OD paint on either. I'll hold off on picking it up for now until I can correctly identify it.
