Patchcollector Posted May 23, 2016 Share #2 Posted May 23, 2016 The bottom one is neat, never saw that one before.I have a few of the 162nd "Copperhead" pieces, never saw your variation.Like to see the backs of all of these if possible.
firefighter Posted May 23, 2016 Author Share #3 Posted May 23, 2016 Thanks PC.To be honest it's the only one I've ever seen too.I will get scans of the back soon. Apparently the 'JESUS NUT' is the main rotor nut. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jesus_nut

Patchcollector Posted May 24, 2016 Share #5 Posted May 24, 2016 Apparently the 'JESUS NUT' is the main rotor nut. Yes,I've heard of that. The 162nd Maintenance piece looks fine and still has alot of the paper backing on it.The Hanger Rats patch is probably OK too,it's the Copperhead patch that looks a bit odd to me.Like to see the back of that one,if possible. firefighter Posted May 24, 2016 Author Share #6 Posted May 24, 2016 Thanks but i know they are righteous. Whats odd about the COPPERHEAD one, besides the DIE BASTARDS DIE being a different color?
Patchcollector Posted May 24, 2016 Share #7 Posted May 24, 2016 Yes the Die Bastards Die text is the wrong colors and the background of the disc is also the wrong color. The snake is the wrong color too and very differently rendered than originals I've come across. Also, the general overall quality of the patch is much lower than ones I've seen, but having stated that I've also seen my share of poorly done patches that were authentic. Here is a link to a 162nd Unit History PDF that discusses the patch and has an accurately rendered image of it: http://www.vhpa.org/unit/162ndHistory.pdf Here is another link to the VHPA Site that has many photos of the unit patches: http://www.museum.vhpa.org/companies/162ahc/162ahc.shtml
Patchcollector Posted May 24, 2016 Share #8 Posted May 24, 2016 Here is a screenshot image taken directly from the 162nd History PDF for comparison to yours. This is the version that I'm used to seeing.
firefighter Posted May 24, 2016 Author Share #9 Posted May 24, 2016 Yes the background color is different, not sure but probably a variation? The motto is in red probably to stand out? I will get pics

Patchcollector Posted May 24, 2016 Share #11 Posted May 24, 2016 The backs of both those look A-OK to me.Yeah probably a not too often seen variation. There were many different shops in Nam to get patches made,so variations were bound to happen. firefighter Posted May 24, 2016 Author Share #12 Posted May 24, 2016 Exactly. I never really paid attention to the background before. At one point I thought it may have been Korean made.Their slogan was always one of my favorites, right up there with the SOG 'Kill for Peace'. Patchcollector Posted May 25, 2016 Share #13 Posted May 25, 2016 Yeah,I'm a sucker for a cool slogan too."Death is our Business.Business is Good","Death from Above",and "Death on Call" are a few of my faves It's interesting to me that for the 162nd Copperheads there were two mottos that were used, the "Die Bastards Die" and "No Warning". I thought that the motto changed to the "No Warning" when the unit transitioned from an Aviation Company to an Assault Helicopter Company, but I've seen Aviation Company pieces with the "No Warning" motto. I'm posting one in a pocket hanger that I found here: http://www.cantho-rvn.org/insignias/fozard-15-162nd-ahc-copperheads-398x550.jpg Sometimes both mottos were used on the same patch. Here is a round Copperheads piece that incorporates both the mottos. I found the image here: http://home.earthlink.net/~ratpack187/
itshistory Posted May 25, 2016 Share #14 Posted May 25, 2016 There are many variations for this gun platoon. The motto was changed to simply "No Warning" when an incoming commander determined the "Die Bastards Die" to be "politically incorrect". vietvet7071 Posted May 25, 2016 Share #16 Posted May 25, 2016 Interesting patch variations. By the way, the Jesus Nut does hold the rotors on and the name refers to if it comes off you yell and pray to Jesus.
firefighter Posted May 25, 2016 Author Share #17 Posted May 25, 2016 IH those are great looking patches. I love the one with the Copperhead around the Huey, one I have never seen.I don't think it's in the ASMIC catalog either.

Yes I figured it had something to do with someone not approving of that motto. Great patches,as usual!

firefighter Posted June 20, 2016 Author Share #21 Posted June 20, 2016 NTS those pocket hangers came out of Korea. A large group was found in the 80's. Bob, I heard before that these are Korean made. But are the Vietnam era?
nguoi tien su Posted June 21, 2016 Share #22 Posted June 21, 2016 Thanks Bob. Yes, like Firefighter I have seen a lot of them made for other kind of units. Are they correct for a VN use?
vintageproductions Posted June 21, 2016 Share #23 Posted June 21, 2016 I am not 100% sure, but the guy who had the quantity of them was stationed in Korea and went around buying up all insignia store stock. I think they are VN period and they show traits of Korean made Vietnam insignia, but I wasn't the one picking the stores and buying them. I know when I was doing the same thing in the Philippines, in the 80's, when I came across Vietnam and older insignia, I would quiz the shop owners and get as much info as possible.
