GF97 Posted May 9, 2016 Share #1 Posted May 9, 2016 Got this at a garage sale for $2. Figured I couldn't lose out on anything for that price. Any idea what type of sword this would have gone to? I have looked through multiple sword reference books and I have found nothing that looks the same. I originally thought it was for a model 1902 but quickly figured out otherwise. Maybe it's not even American but none the less here it is. Any ideas or suggestions will be appreciated.

reschenk Posted May 9, 2016 Share #3 Posted May 9, 2016 Looks like a variant of the British M1821 hilt, although I don't recognize the upper two-screw attachment.
GF97 Posted May 9, 2016 Author Share #4 Posted May 9, 2016 Reschenk, I know, it looks a lot like a few different models. It's weird how the branches all meet at the attachment point though, and I can't visualize how it would mount on the sword. I also guess it is either made of nickel or silver, it is definitely non ferrous minus the bushing where the blade was fitted.
reschenk Posted May 9, 2016 Share #5 Posted May 9, 2016 The only thing I can think of is that there was a "tail" protruding off the pommel to which the hand guard was riveted or screwed. Why they would design it that way is certainly not clear to me.
Horseclover Posted May 11, 2016 Share #6 Posted May 11, 2016 My mind is wandering but I suggest looking to mid 19th century bayonets. It looks familiar.
