Picked these up awhile back (either from a forum member here or ebay... cannot remember which) but I suspect that they were made in error.
To my knowledge there has never been a MGySgt rank with only three rockers, not to mention this a current style chevron.

Very nice....Just curious as to how you know they are female chevrons. Are they smaller in size? They look smaller but I am not sure.

Yes Kat, they are the current regulation female size. I should have included a ruler to show size. Sorry!

It never did. There is no such rank as that. That's why I suspect that this was produced by mistake. Who knows how or why or how many are out there.

I looked and can not find any 3 rocker Master Gunnery Sgt stripes in a male or female version.I wonder if its a manufacture error? I tried looking under Jr & Sr ROTC, no luck.

That was what I said in my initial post (:

Yes I know you did.I was agreeing with you.I was just stating that I too tried to look for a 3 rocker one.

There were 3 rocker SGT Major USMC chevrons in the late 50's. Had these 3 rocker Mater Gunnery chevrons been of older manufacturer, there may have been a possibility that they had a connection to that somehow. But being of current manufacturer, I'd have to agree they were made in error, or perhaps the guy who manufacturers strangely colored US Army shoulder patches (and sells them on Ebay to unsuspecting collectors) has branched-out to creating and selling strange chevrons.....

Definitely post 1995, and I'd say an error at the factory. Wouldn't be the first time. We've seen SgtMaj of the Marine Corps chevrons in female size...an obvious error as there has never been a female holding that rank, and since only one exists at a time I imagine he has to special order all his ranks. Definitely not going to find them at the PX (unless Quantico...?)

BRIG I have a pair of the female SMMC stripes.Khaki version and look 60s/70s era.I have had them for a long time and do not remember where I got them. The EG&A centers are both facing one way, not a R & L set, they way I got them.

I believe the mistake was made in the 90s...the set I sold were dress, and had the embroidered edges. Of course, shirt emblems have never had embroidered edges, but as chevrons haven't changed much since the 60s, I'd venture to say yours are close in age to the ones I sold

Yes please post pics of those khaki female SMMCs! I need to see those! Brig, as far as the SMMC ordering chevrons, they can be ordered directly from The Uniform Store (That was where I got mine for my SMMC display last year). The story I understood that resulted in the female sized SMMC chevrons was that one year, through a clerical error, a batch of those chevrons were ordered in the smaller size. Would have been anywhere between 1970 and early 1990's when they went merrowed. The only thing that makes me doubt that is there do appear to be quite a few of them out there and I have also seen both the older female size (short and squatty) and the current female size. I have never seen any with merrowed edges though. Do you have photos of the ones you sold Brig?

No, long gone

Merrowing of the edges on alpha/blues chevrons occurred in 1995

And you are saying that you sold a pair of merrowed female SMMCs dress chevrons?

Here are the two style female SMMC chevrons I have seen, and on closer inspection the left pair does appear to have merrowed edges. Does anyone know what year the Corps changed the size on the female chevrons? I was under the impression it was before 1995 but if the old size female chevrons have merrowed edges why would the current size NOT have merrowed edges?

I imagine Brig that the ones you sold were the same ones on the left. The ones on the right are the ones that appear on ebay frequently. The lower image is comparing sizes between the current male chevron and the (current size) female chevrons.

I stand corrected. Dress blue version with the 2 stars. It's been awhile since I've seen them.
