KASTAUFFER

James Holmes was a graduate of the USMA class of 1938. In 1942 he would be a battery commander with the 60th CA on Corregidor.

He was a passenger on the Hellship ARISAN MARU when he lost his life 10/24/44 when she was sunk by the USS Snook. The Snook had no idea the ship was carrying POWs from the Philippines to Japan. 1776 POWs lost their lives in the sinking. 5 Survived. Capt. Holmes was not one of them.

For his service in WWII he was awarded the Silver Star and the Purple Heart.

More US Personnel were lost in the sinking of the Arisan Maru than on any other ship in WWII including the USS Arizona . Its just a shame not more people know about the tragedy.
