knd643 Posted April 30, 2016 Share #1 Posted April 30, 2016 Going to be cleaning my USMC M1903A1 Springfield since I had shot it. Don't do much with firearms and I know that with antique firearms there's do's and dont's with cleaning them. I was just wondering if hoppes 9 oil or rem oil would work fine on it. I've heard people say that hoppes 9 oil works great and some say they hate it(majority say they like it). I've heard a lot of mix reviews about rem oil though. Figured i'd get your guys input on it though. The springfield I am talking about is in the link. http://www.usmilitariaforum.com/forums/index.php?/topic/257481-2015-finds/
Chris_B Posted April 30, 2016 Share #2 Posted April 30, 2016 Regular old Hoppe's oil ain't gonna hurt that old girl. I've never heard anything bad about regular old Hoppe's number 9 lubricating oil. They make an 'Elite' gun oil as well, supposedly it is water-based; maybe this is what you're referring to with the reviews. I wouldn't worry about using regular olde tyme Hoppe's #9 gun oil on any of my firearms. I'd spend more time worrying about what toilet paper is on sale, to be honest. Nice rifle. The Meatcan Posted May 1, 2016 Share #4 Posted May 1, 2016 The only way Hoppes No. 9 is going to hurt anything is if you drink a gallon of it while you're cleaning your rifle Most important thing when you're cleaning your old milsurp is to protect that barrel crown! Have fun shooting it! Terry
Chris_B Posted May 1, 2016 Share #5 Posted May 1, 2016 No worries about the crown with an '03- it gets cleaned from the breech, not the muzzle
Bmg17a1 Posted May 1, 2016 Share #6 Posted May 1, 2016 Was it fired with corrosive ammo?

cplnorton Posted May 1, 2016 Share #8 Posted May 1, 2016 Hopes #9 is fine for the bore. Remove the bolt and clean it from the breach if you are using cleaning rods. That is the way the Marines did it. For the rest any gun oil and a tooth brush is what I use.
