hirsca Posted April 29, 2016 Share #1 Posted April 29, 2016 I recently acquired a circa 1951 USN G-1 jacket, J-7823(AER). Its condition is excellent, with little noticable wear. However, the zipper needs to be replaced. Have any of you out there had a zipper replaced and approximately, how much does that cost? Any helpful hints with the process are much appreciated. Thanks, Al
bazelot Posted April 29, 2016 Share #2 Posted April 29, 2016 It is a beautiful jacket. It looks barely used. What is wrong with the zipper? Those original zippers are next to impossible to find and you cannot put a YKK zipper on a jacket like this. Could you post pics of the zipper to see what is wrong with it? hirsca Posted April 29, 2016 Author Share #3 Posted April 29, 2016 Hello bazelot. The zipper is a CONMAR. There are two areas that have missing teeth and the zipper pull is missing. Other than that, the zipper is in great shape and still stitched firmly withiout and damage. Not sure if missing teeth can be replaced, but it sure would be easiier than the alternatives. One more picture to follow this post. Thanks, Al

bazelot Posted April 30, 2016 Share #5 Posted April 30, 2016 It looks like the zipper is toast but with a puller you could still use it. A puller is easy to find but you will never be able to reattach the teeth (trust me I tried many times and it failed every single time.
NPerry Posted May 11, 2016 Share #6 Posted May 11, 2016 Unless you are planning to re-hit the Bridges at Toko-Ri, why mess with it?
hirsca Posted May 11, 2016 Author Share #7 Posted May 11, 2016 A friend found the correct Comar slider head and pull tab. Slipped it on the teeth at the large opening, slid it down to the stop, inserted the other side and--drum roll please--it worked! Not planning to go past the large portion of missing teeth. Looking now for the leather pull. He thinks he has one somewhere. The jacket now resides in his collection. Thanks for all of the comments. Maverickson Posted July 6, 2016 Share #9 Posted July 6, 2016 You might be able to find a replacement zipper at mash japan, easy to find on the internet. JB Hi, Yes, Mash Co Japan has a close to the same fine toothed aluminum small toothed zipper.. However and most unfortunately, it is the just later model zip than originally found on your jacket. There are some marked differences between the two and are completely incompatible with one another. The good news is they are close. Moreover & since you will be replacing both sides then no one will be the wiser. Cheers, Dave
