Hello,

I found this Jacket recently. Am I correct that this is a repro? can anyone tell me more about "Urban Surplus" the company that made it? Is it a wartime company or a recent reproduction company and where are they from?

Thank you!

Thanks Patches for finding the company! They do a good job of them.

Doyler, yes, I was suspect about a 68 dated first pattern too.

Thanks for the info guys!

Wouldn't this be a 2nd pattern, no shoulder straps?

The 2nd pattern looks like the 1st pattern jacket except that it has the flaps covering the buttons, which is also found on the 3rd pattern.

This jacket kinda looks like one of the converted 3rd pattern jackets some troops had altered at a tailor shop, like this example http://www.mooremilitaria.com/one-of-a-kind/conversion-1stpattern.html

No clue on the authenticity, but its a pretty interesting piece.

I think is a Japanese company that makes REPROS.

According to that web site, they sell (among other things) used US military clothing from many different suppliers. It does not appear to me that they make repros themselves, but some of the content looks legit while a lot of it looks like repros that came from elsewhere that they are selling. Have a look:

Used jackets: http://camp-jp.com/mijacket.htm

Used Buzz Ricksons jackets: http://camp-jp.com/mijacket_buzz.htm

Used Leather jackets: http://camp-jp.com/mijacket-l.htm

There is a ton more on that web site. Lots of uniforms, patches and gear. Some very interesting content (thanks for the link!) but I doubt they are the "Urban Surplus" company. I also doubt that any firm supplying the military would have the word "surplus" in their name because it implies used goods, not new ones. So I think the OP's jacket is a repro...

http://www.isky-depo.jp/ has a tiger stripe shirt with the same DSA contract number, as do a number of other items found online.

Here's tiger stripe pants with this DSA number:

Here it is on a pair of OG trousers, with a different company name (also repos I believe):

Here they use the similar label on what looks like current era SWAT clothing:

And yet another name, same DS number on a pair of civilian shorts:

Interesting. I know Houston Inc is a Japanese company that makes Repros. I wonder if Urban Surplus is related to them?

I wonder if Urban Surplus is related to them?

They certainly use the same label maker :)

It has always been my understanding that DSA contract numbers were unique to a specific item made by a specific maker and that the stock number, such as 8405-935-3307, is used on all identical items regardless of who makes them.

I'm sure it's been done before, but this is the first time I've seen such "accurate" contract info on a fake label. Usually they use some sort of contract number that is changed enough to ALMOST look like a real one, but in this case, "DSA-100-68-C-2427" fits the pattern of a real contract number.

If someone suspects an item as fake, they could Google the DSA number. Be sure to put the number in quotation marks so google searches only for that exact number.

vietnamgear.com used to be a great place to look up DSA number info to find out when certain patterns were produced, but they've gone offline.

I actually found that I have a pair of pants by the same maker. It has the same contract etc as well.

8405-935-3303 and contract DSA-100-68-C-2427

The stock number 8405-935-3307 is for Medium Short rip-stop tropical combat trousers. So it seems strange that its on a coat

Although this looks like its a transitional 3rd pattern poplin coat that's been modified to look like a 1st pattern. I don't think it is.

The 3rd pattern transitional has no epaulets, waist tabs or gas flap. There are slight variations to this theme before they went to the rip-stop coats.

Or does it have a gas flap? I cant tell 100% from the pics. I guess if it does still have a gas flap its a transitional 2nd to 3rd pattern.

Also the labels still look wrong for a 3rd pattern coat as it should be described more along the lines of Coat, Mans, Cotton, Wind Resistant etc etc.

Hello 63 recon,

It has a gasflap and waist tabs but no shoulder epaulets. Would you say this was made to look like a transitional jacket or just mistakes by the maker? I think it was made for the fashion market rather than the reenactor market.

Thanks!

Hi,

yes possibly made to look like a 3rd pattern but as has been noted there were variations through the transition from 2nd to 3rd pattern.

Hard to say why and who made it but the rip-stop pants you have having the same makers name and contract number seems like they went to a bit of effort.

Even though the labels are semi incorrect and the FSN is wrong for those pants.
