Spacesaver is a well-established museum storage infrastructure firm of course, but they've highlighted a military artifact storage system that seems worth posting. VERY expensive stuff, but also VERY durable and efficient in most cases:

With just one such artifact to consider, what I would do is to place it flat in a neutral pH plastic or other material sleeve with an also neutral pH stiffener board, and then store it that way.

Newspaper is notoriously acidic and will deteriorate pretty much no matter what one does, but it is best to prevent folding/creasing, and to keep it in a neutral pH environment.

Keep it out of exposure to constant light (especially sunlight), moisture and critters, of course, too.

If you have more paper ephemera than this, then that might justify obtaining a solander or Hollinger box for long term storage.

If any further question, please let me know.

This is a rather unusual database resource having to do with the building blocks of monuments and other historical architecture, which will come in handy for some of us:

So often many of us have concerns about storage of paper artifacts, and the effect of humidity or temperature fluctuation over time:

Also, if anybody catches a defunct link in the original list posted to this thread, then let me know and I'll try to sort that out for us.

The following excellent formula for good result simple cleaning supplies and method for (in this instance) a set of vintage dress whites w/cap - was posted by USMF member:

Wedgehead30

10 Dec 2016

"The steps were as follows:

Pants and Coat, Dry Cleaned and pressed. Not happy with the results. So onto the next step.

Pants, one overnight soak in Oxiclean, clean water rinse. Rinsed again in Mrs.Stewart's Bluing Liquid and a final clean water rinse. Air dried and then returned to the dry cleaners for pressing.

Coat, overnight soak in Oxiclean. Not happy with the results. Second overnight soak in Oxiclean and a clean water rinse. Second rinse with Mrs. Stewart's Bluing Liquid and then a final clean water rinse. Air dry and then to the cleaners for pressing.

I couldn't get the coat as white as the pants and neither as white as the hat cover.

A couple lessons I learned:

- Make absolutely sure the Oxiclean is completely dissolved and thoroughly mixed. Same with the Bluing Liquid.

- Put a clean white towel on top of the material you're soaking to keep it completely submerged.

- Stay away from regular bleach. It's not your friend and will yellow and weaken most of the older fabrics.

- If you can test a small piece of the material it's ideal. Takes the gamble out of the process."

In the universe of artifacts, some of the most delicate and difficult to restore or preserve - are made of glass.

This is a nice article about that topic:

Recent/new (to me) professional publication about insects and fungi impacts on historical artifact collections. It would be interesting to learn what USMF experts in that domain think of this:

EXTREMELY high magnification device, for very close visual examination, especially of textiles (e.g. patches, uniforms, web artifacts etc.) and other objects - simple, affordable.

A suggestion for we who so often post photos of militaria on USMF...

In museums, when making such documentation, we found it useful and expedient, to add a simple ruler in the picture next to the artifact - so as to help visualize scale/size. This is often done in archeological situations as well.

Mention of this is being made simply because so often, a viewer of a posting will very soon ask about the size of the piece, and that key information is always highly important to authentication.

Here is a quick example of my own:
