Hogan Posted March 23, 2016 Share #1 Posted March 23, 2016 I resently saw a couple of smaller (then usual) metal Major oakleaves. The guys of the stand that sold them didn't know what they where for. So I ask you people. Does anyone know what they where used for or put on?
Grant S. Posted March 23, 2016 Share #2 Posted March 23, 2016 Don't know exactly how much smaller you mean but Navy and USMC use small insignia on shirt collars.

KurtA Posted March 23, 2016 Share #4 Posted March 23, 2016 USAF also used smaller officer rank insignia on khaki shirts in the 50's and 60's - miniature versions of the "Army" style rank. As far as being USN/USMC or USAF, it would depend on the style of the leaves - the USN/USMC leaves have the mirror background with "veins". The type used by USAF wouldn't have that. Google officer rank insignia for both US Army and US Navy and you'll quickly see what I mean.
Hogan Posted March 23, 2016 Author Share #5 Posted March 23, 2016 Thanks, yes I know the difference, from my memory I recall thei where the usual non marine style. So their most likely USAF then would that be both ww2 and post war? Or was it more a postwar practice?
Justin B. Posted March 23, 2016 Share #6 Posted March 23, 2016 It was after the USAF got their own uniforms c. 1950. They were used till the late '70s when shoulder slides became standard for rank on the light blue shirt.
Hogan Posted March 23, 2016 Author Share #7 Posted March 23, 2016 Good, so there's no use for these in a ww2 inmpression.
patches Posted March 24, 2016 Share #8 Posted March 24, 2016 Good, so there's no use for these in a ww2 inmpression. WWII, It would depend, if they are Marine/Navy, then yes, not good of course for Army from any period really. A check on the hallmarks would tell us a little more. KurtA Posted March 24, 2016 Share #9 Posted March 24, 2016 Actually, if you go to well prior to WW2, there were the "shirt size" branch and rank insignia for the US Army. Those were small size. Would need photos to determine if that is a possibility. They would have a WW1 "look" to them.
