Evening all

i was given a WW2 zippo by the original owners grandson the other week to try and find out some information.
It has on it
"Presented by VADM V.L.LOWRANCE, USN, COMSUBLANT"
On the front is a cream circle with COMMANDER SUBMARINE FORCE U.S. ATLANTIC FLEET around the inside of the circle
In the middle is a flag with 3 stars surmounted on a periscope? with a fish either side.
will try and get some photos once i can upload. As i am fairly new to the forum i have to achieve so many listings before i can post pictures.
I have just pulled the lighter out from the shell and on the ZIPPO it reads
"FOR BEST RESULTS USE ZIPPO FLINTS AND FLUID.
ZIPPO MFG.CO.BRADFORD, PA.
MADE IN ZIPPO U.S.A
PAT. 2517191
Is there any way i can confirm date, and source value of such an item?
It was supposedly given to the original owner who was in the British merchant marine.
regards
Jon

Salvage Sailor

Jon,

Look on the bottom for the year code of your lighter (if any), sounds like a 1950 post war presentation lighter as it has the 2517191 patent code

2517191 ran from 1950 (or late 49) thru much of 1957.

However, is that the markings on the insert? The bottom of the case should be marked as well. If the case is WW2, it would be painted black crackle & made of steel. The bottoms can be hard to read.

With a few pictures of the case & insert, they are very easy to date. Remember, a lot of inserts were replaced when they broke, and so were hinges, so it can be tricky!
