MattS Posted March 3, 2016 Share #1 Posted March 3, 2016 I'm not sure where to post this. I am trying to identify all the 'boonie hats' issued by the US military since the inception of the "Hat, Jungle" in the late 1960s. I know there are others (like tiger stripe) that were worn, but not officially issued. Here's what I have, dates of introduction subject to change. 1967 Hat, Jungle OD-7,w/insect net (poplin and later rip-stop cotton) 1968 Hat, Camouflage, Tropical, Combat, Type II (ERDL) rip-stop (do poplin versions exist?) 1981 Hat, Sun, Woodland Camouflage Pattern, Type III 1981 Hat, Camouflage Pattern, Desert (6-color 'chocolate chip' desert) 1990 Hat, Sun, Hot Weather, Desert Camouflage (3-color 'coffee stain' desert) Then around 2003-05, the branches started making their own camo patterns; Army: Hat, Sun, Army Combat Uniform, Type IV, and then OCP/Multicam USMC: Cover, Field, MARPAT, Desert and Woodland USAF: Hat, Sun, Hot Weather, Type V, ABU USN: NWU 1 (do these exist?), NWU 2, NWU 3 Please let me know if I have missed any, or if some of those aren't correct. Thanks!

MattS Posted March 3, 2016 Author Share #3 Posted March 3, 2016 Good point Owen! If there were both green and brown dominant patterns of ERDL boonies issued, can anyone show the labels?

rd12 Posted March 4, 2016 Share #10 Posted March 4, 2016 2nd pic. This was my Dad's hat. He was in the Army Reserves, 297th MI. They were attached to the 19th SFG and for a time wore OG 107 jungle fatigues in the 1980's.
MattS Posted March 4, 2016 Author Share #11 Posted March 4, 2016 Looks like we have identified Type I through Type V. Here's labels for Type III (woodland, 1985) Type IV (ACU, 2004) Type V (USAF ABU, 2007)
Beau-Brummel Posted March 4, 2016 Share #12 Posted March 4, 2016 I had Jack L Williams converted short brim and It was Brown Dominant, 69 dated.
MattS Posted March 4, 2016 Author Share #13 Posted March 4, 2016 Two ERDL boonies, same nomenclature, same size (7 1/8), same stock number, but different versions (green dom vs. brown dom). Compare this green dom label to Owen's brown dom label.
kammo-man Posted March 4, 2016 Share #14 Posted March 4, 2016 Different year Different manufacturer !
MattS Posted March 4, 2016 Author Share #15 Posted March 4, 2016 Huh. Thanks for that Owen, it doesn't look like the supply system made any distinction between the 2 versions. But we do!
kammo-man Posted March 4, 2016 Share #16 Posted March 4, 2016 I think the ERDLS were only made in 2 sizes also.
MattS Posted March 4, 2016 Author Share #17 Posted March 4, 2016 In hat sizes, 6 5/8ths is 4 sizes away from 7 1/8th (the others being 6 3/4, 6 7/8, 7, and then 7 1/8), but the FSN is only one digit less, 8415-935-6658. I should stop trying to make sense of the military supply system.

MattS Posted March 4, 2016 Author Share #24 Posted March 4, 2016 Thanks for those! Anyone have any USN boonies to add? And do they officially exist in NWU 1 'blueberry'? I've seen commercial copies on Ebay, don't know if they are an issue item though.
