KASTAUFFER Posted February 27, 2016 Share #1 Posted February 27, 2016 I just acquired his cover from Corregidor at the SOS and since its from February, it seemed fitting I post it now! Any mail sent from Bataan or Corregidor in 1941 or 1942 is exceedingly rare. It's the "D-Bail" of WWII Military Mail. Army nurse, Lt. Madeline Ullom was one of the "Angels of Bataan" who found temporary refuge on Corregidor before it fell on May 6, 1942. This cover was mailed by her on Corregidor and has the typical Asiatic Fleet cancel normally seen on mail posted there. The censor was Lt. Col Legrande A.Diller who was one of MacArthur's aides who made it back to Australia with him on A PT boat. This cover was carried off The Rock by the submarine USS Swordfish on its February 20th departure. Lt. Ullom was held as an Internee at Santo Tomas and survived the war. She remained in the Army until 1964 and remained active in POW organizations up until the day she passed away.

sundance Posted February 27, 2016 Share #5 Posted February 27, 2016 Interesting item. I'm sure she never thought 74 years ago that we'd be fascinated by her short note to family all these years later.

Very interesting letter. I would imagine one from an Angel of Bataan would be even more rare. The nurses on Bataan were amazing. RustyCanteen Posted February 29, 2016 Share #8 Posted February 29, 2016 Very nice Kurt! I like the provisional T-3z cancel too. It must have been a terrible feeling knowing that relief was not coming, and a nightmare after that point.
