Officer in charge Marine Detachment on USS Nevada that Sunday morning and went on to serve in the Guadalcanal campaign, Bougainville, and then Guam where he was severely wounded. He refused evacuation until he had seen to the security of his units positions and was awarded the Silver Star and Bronze Star for actions there.
