WWII 540th Combat Engineer Grouping

Hey Guys, Here is another small grouping to a vet that was with the 540th Combat Engineer Group and later the 2832nd Engineers. This is a very interesting grouping because it has quite a few letters from him, that talk about his experiences in combat that somehow made it passed the Army Examiner. There is one that has Anzio Beachhead at the top dated May 23 1944. The grouping also has a 7th Army, 5th Army, and 9th Infantry Division patch which I am not sure why the 9th ID is in there, unless they were attached at some point?? There is also a neat 540th Pocket Patch that looks like their DI. The invasion armband was rolled up tight in the corner of the little box I found it in, and is still nice and soft, and there are some nice photos of him with buddies and one of him holding a TR flag. There is also a nice piece of foreign currency that has a bunch of signatures on it. Would love to know where this note is from if anyone can tell me.

Thanks

Devin

Are there any letters that mention the invasion of Sicily?

I'm not sure...there are a ton of letters and I am just starting to dig into them. I will let you know if I come across any.

I appreciate it. My grandfather landed with this unit in Gela and Salerno. Would like to see what he has to say about it. Thanks!

Hi there. I know this is a relatively old post, but I just ran across it searching for 540th Combat Engineers images online.

The 540th was my grandfather's unit during WWII. He eventually was the CO for the first battalion (the 2832nd) of the two that made up the regiment. He made the entire roster of landings done by the 540th: Casa Blanca, Sicily, Salerno, Anzio, and Southern France. If he hadn't gotten his feet webbed by then, he also crossed the Rhein as well.

The history of the 540th can be told better by a woman named Marion Chard than I can. She has at least done all the research and put it all in one spot. Please look here:

http://www.6thcorpscombatengineers.com/540th.htm

Her whole site (http://www.6thcorpscombatengineers.com/default.html) is dedicated to the engineers of VI Corps and would be a treasure trove of information for those interested in the subject or units therein. Her interest started as the daughter of Walter "Monday" Poniedzialek who was one of the enlisted men in the second battalion (2833rd) of the 540th, which is how we became acquainted.

If you have specific questions you can email Marion or ask the folks on their associated forum: http://www.6thcorpscombatengineers.com/engforum/index.php.

She may even know about the patches the men wore and where they were made.

Walts Daughter

Hi: Haven't been here in a long time, due to running my own forum, etc. But a friend of mine pointed out this post to me and just wanted to tell you that my dad was a member of the 540th. He was with H&S Company. I'm the historian for the unit, and have been doing research on the group for over a dozen years. I see my buddy made a post regarding my site, several days ago. Thanks.

Anyway, it's great to see things I haven't seen before. Appreciate the photos.

Devincu, I think your mailbox is full. I see you have this group for sale without the German items and American flag armband. Are you keeping those items or selling them separate? Thanks
