tigerfan Posted October 22, 2015 Share #1 Posted October 22, 2015 I go to estate auctions, estate sales, etc. all the time. I frequently see jars, tins, etc. loaded with buttons. As a rule I look at them very quick or not at all as I never find anything of interest. But this time a few eagles caught my eye so I dug a bit deeper. This lot originally had four tins and some misc. early sewing related things but as you can see I condensed. First photo shows mostly early civilian buttons with most of the military separated. tigerfan Posted October 22, 2015 Author Share #4 Posted October 22, 2015 These next two appear to have the letter G, possibly a school or ??. I believe these next two are Southern Infantry.
tigerfan Posted October 22, 2015 Author Share #5 Posted October 22, 2015 An interesting homemade dice. And lastly an early percussion cap container made of paper. The letter K and numbers 20 were inside.

Manchu Warrior Posted October 22, 2015 Share #9 Posted October 22, 2015 When ever I find buttons that I believe are Civil War era I look at this site. http://www.virginiarelics.com/confederate_civil_war_buttons.htm The Confederate scripted Infantry button is the six one down and they are asking quite a bit of money for one. Of course you also have the Federal Infantry and Artillery buttons. Great find!!

Brian from Columbus Posted October 23, 2015 Share #15 Posted October 23, 2015 Congrats! According to the Tice book, all your infantry ones are good ACW period. Didn't look at the artillery. The Scovill Tice # is G1215A84. The Harrington Tice # is G1215A21. The CS Isaacs Tice # is CS1215A2.
nchistory Posted October 30, 2015 Share #16 Posted October 30, 2015 Beautiful Script I's, and Company Letter, and regimental #'s. Would have been great to find the soldiers name. Seeing you are from NY, probably belonged to a soldier from Co. K, 20th NY Infantry. I imagine the eagle button are probably his as well, and the (2) Confederate buttons were souvenirs (battlefield pick-ups) he brought home. Nice. USCapturephotos Posted November 1, 2015 Share #18 Posted November 1, 2015 Great find! I always look at the button groups at flea markets etc for this reason. I have found lots of Civil War buttons this way through the years, mostly common US eagles, eagle I's and such but did find 3 Confederate Staff Officer buttons this way. I especially love the headgear insignia that you found too. Thanks for sharing. Paul
