I still have no clue on the why the wings were being worn, but I thought I would add the following two photos. These are two female aviators who flew during the war to help raise money for the ARC.

According to a photo caption listed on owensarchive.com, Ruth Bancroft Law was the only woman permitted to wear the "Government Aviation Uniform" in France during WWI. (I'd sure like to see a close-up of those small wings on her left pocket flap!)
