M1Garandy Posted October 6, 2015 Share #1 Posted October 6, 2015 I finally found a copy of TM 9-500 locally after looking for a number of years. The only problem I have is that it is hole punched for a binder but has no binding. When in active use, what kind of binder or holder would have held the several hundred pages together? I'm not sure if this is the right category to post this in but "ephemera and photographs" didn't seem ideal either. Am I overlooking a forum/sub-forum for FM's, TM's and that type of paperwork on the USMF?
gwb123 Posted October 7, 2015 Share #2 Posted October 7, 2015 The government used to issue these big, 3 inch, heavy duty black binders. They were solid as a rock and weighed a ton, but over time the paper linings tended to degrade and the rings would rust. I'd worry less about authenticity and more about preservation. If you go to Office Depot you might be able to find something close. "Ephemera and photographs" is more like individual paper items. You could have put this under books, but it is fine here since it is ordnance related.
ccyooper Posted October 7, 2015 Share #3 Posted October 7, 2015 For the big manuals they had cardboard expanding binders that screwed together. Many times it would indicate on the cover what the binder was for, etc.
dalbert Posted October 8, 2015 Share #4 Posted October 8, 2015 What's the size? I have at least one extra WWII era binder available, which is for the old ORD SNL sized documents. I'm in another state at the moment, or I'd measure the binder. David Albert [email protected]
M1Garandy Posted October 8, 2015 Author Share #5 Posted October 8, 2015 David, I'll measure tonight and post back. I'm thinking aroujnd 8 1/2"x11" but will confirm. I have a couple of late WWII/early KW era ORD SNL's that came in the package with this manual and they are smaller. This copy of 9-500 is dated in the early 1960's. M1Garandy Posted October 9, 2015 Author Share #6 Posted October 9, 2015 I was close in my guess. It looks like the manual is 8"x10"x3". I did not measure the hole spacing on the pages.
dalbert Posted October 10, 2015 Share #7 Posted October 10, 2015 The extra binder I have fits ORD SNL's, and is meant for material that is 6" x 9.5", and has vertical slots (instead of holes) along the spine of each document. hardstripe Posted October 10, 2015 Share #8 Posted October 10, 2015 Until the 1990s most Army paper was 8" x 10". All of our standard forms and typing paper was that size and most of the TMs and Regs were 8" x 10". Finally someone high up figured out that the country was using the standard 8.5" x 11" paper so the Army switched to that size. They finally figured out the 8" x 10" paper cost more because it had to be custom cut. We had to use up our old supply of 8" x 10" forms, etc., before we could get the 8.5" x 11" stuff. M1Garandy Posted October 14, 2015 Author Share #9 Posted October 14, 2015 Now that I have been looking for an 8x10x3 binder of some type for this manual of mine (with no success I might add), where the heck do I find one?
