I am not very familiar with air corp items and would like to get some opinions on this. The vet was a pilot of a B-25 bomber named Duration Plus. He was in the 57th bomb wing, 340th group, 488th sqadron. The blue leather patch is that of the 340th group, but the Bomby the Bear patch is a 334th bomb group, 471st bomb squad if my research is correct. Would it be not unusual to have 2 different squadron patches on the same jacket? Do you think the paint job on the back was done period? The vet said he did it himself. I knnow I should have asked but didn't at the time. I should be able to get in contact with him again, but until then I wanted some feedback. Also any idea about what the little white tag is? I researched Abblend Schalter and found out that it is a defense industry parts provider. Maybe something off a German plane?

Here is an image of the WWII 488th Bombardment Squadron insignia:

Note: Best I could find on Internet but it has been on USMF before. Maybe someone will remember another USMF thread and post the link here.

The blue leather patch on the jacket was worn by 304th Bombardment Group, while it was assigned to Twelfth AF during WWII. The 334th Bombardment Squadron patch on the jacket is correctly identified. It was a training unit based in South Carolina; it never left the Z.I.

I don't know if the artwork on the back was painted in period but the artist got the tail marking correct: "8W" was a plane assigned to 488th BS while it was based on Corsica 1944/45.

Did you know that 488th BS was the Catch-22 squadron? Joseph Heller was assigned to the 44th and based the novel on his experiences in the unit. Here is a mission order that shows Heller assigned as bombardier of B-25 "8P" and his friend, Lt. Yohannan, the model for the main character "Yossarian," flying bombardier in B-25 "8U":

Thanks for posting the mission order Wailuna. Where did you find it? The vet did mention that Heller was in the same squadron. I believe he said he shared the same tents with him. The vet had so many stories it was hard to remember everything. Hopefully the next time I visit with him I can record it. One story he told was of his squadrons planes getting damaged 3 seperate times on the ground. Once from a tornado, another from when Vesuvius erupted, and once from straffing and bombing by the Luftwaffe. It was a great experience talking to him. Here is the rest of the group I got from him. Besides the jacket, I like his crusher cap the best, its well worn, definetly been there.

...The 334th Bombardment Squadron patch on the jacket is correctly identified....

...Joseph Heller was assigned to the 44th...

Correction: I carelessly misidentified two units in my earlier post (#6).

"334th Bombardment Squadron" should read "471st Bombardment Squadron"

"...Joseph Heller was assigned to the 44th..." should read "...assigned to the 488th..."

I regret the confusion.
