Happy Friday all,

Here from my collection is an Army Aviation piece for the 48th Trans.Co. I believe that this patch may be US made and has no plastic backing.

From my research I found that the 48th operated out of Goeppingen Germany for a short period, only about 10 months, from 1 January 1975 until 23 September 1975 before moving to Nellingen to be with the 29th Transportation Company, so this may be a fairly scarce patch to find.

Interestingly, there is a typo on the patch,"Goeppingen" is spelled "Goppingen"! ^_^

Nice patch you got there, but I don't think there is a typo in the spelling, have you noticed the 2 dots above the O in Gottingen, that the same as OE in English.

Thank you Henrik for that info.I never knew that!If that is the way it is spelled in Germany,I'm wondering if this could be a German made piece?

I was stationed there from Dec 1971 to Oct 1973. I was the Crew Chief then Flight Engineer on the Company Chinook 073. I sure would like one of those patches, any idea where to find another?

Hi I sure don't know where to get another, sorry I can't be of more help. I don't think that there were too many made as mine is the only one I've seen in more than 15 years of collecting.

Were you with the 48th at Goeppingen during the years 1971 to 1973?According to the info I found online the 48th was there for only around 10 months in 1975,but I may have found only a partial history of the unit.

I posted the info that I found on the unit in post # 3 of this thread.(You can click on it to make the text larger.)

Is that info correct? If not, maybe you could please add any info that you have.

I also found a link to a message board for the 48th:

http://messageboard.cookebarracks.com/post/48th-transportation-cmon-folks-lets-hear-it-1835977?&trail=15

You could ask around there, someone may have some spare patches.

Hope this helps.

Nice patches.I really like that 29th piece,it's very colorful. The 205th patch is interesting because it has the Signal flags in it's design.

I found some info about the patch that I'll post here.

Sorry for the long delay. I was deverted form Vietnam to Germany in December 1971, ended up at the 48th Trans Co. and was there until October 16th 1973 when I processed out of the Army. Like I stated before I was the Crew Chief then Flight Engineer on the Company Chinook S/N 073. When I got there the 1st Armored Divison was moving out to let the Big Red 1 move in. I hope that helps

Hi. My name is John Weber. I was assigned to the 29th Trans Co (DS) from Apr 73 to Jul '75 as one of the helicopter mechanics.

When I frist arrived in Apr of 1973, we were stationed at Ecterdingen Airfield. Ecterdingen is a town next to Stuttgart airport. The post was on the military side (south side) of Stuttgart International airport. At that time, it was run by the Air Force.

We were a Direct Support level maintenance company for both Hueys (UH-1) and the OH-58 helicopters. At that time, Army aircraft maintenance was broken out into 4 levels of maintenance. Operational, Direct Support, General Support and Depot. The manuals defined which level of maintenenance was authorized to perform which procedure (e.g. engine removal, tail boom repair, etc.).

We had several platoons in the company. DS1 and DS2 were general Huey helicopter mechanics. I was in DS2 platoon. There was an OH-58 platoon. We had a shop platoon. They were the helicopter system specialists. This included an electrician, hydraulics repair, sheet metal repair, machine shop, etc. And of course headquarters and motor pool platoons.

We provided Direct Support maintenance to about a dozen different companies which had Hueys or OH-58's. We'd also work on the occasional Huey Cobra, AH-1.

As I mentioned, we at the 29th Trans Co. were Direct Support. The 48th Trans Co. was the next level up at General Support. So, if we were working on a helicopter and something serious was found, we'd look in the manual to see if Direct Support was authorized to fix it. If not, it went up to General Support (48th Trans Co.) or back to the states for Depot support.

The army took over command of Ecterdingen Field around 74-75. It was now called Stuttgart Army Airfield. In 1975, the 29th Trans Co. moved from the airfield to Nellingen, which was about 5 miles away. My time was up in July 1975. I transferred back to the states, my enlistment was up, and I was honorably discharged.

By the way, Goppingen is NOT mispelled on the patch. If you look closely, the O has 2 dots above it. They are called an umlaut, in German. Vowels with and umlaut can be written out by adding an E to the vowel. So, O umlaut is the same as OE.

Hopefully, I added some information to the military history of the area.

Cheers

Hello everyone. I have been reading and enjoying the posts on the 48th transportation unit. I was assigned to the 48th in June 1971 to June 1972 as a prop and rotor repairman (68E20). I do not remember any patches but am interested in what was available then. I was there when the bloody red one moved into Cooke barracks. I do remember that I enjoyed my assignment and looking back, wonder why I didn't stay in the Army.

I was so surprised to see this past only covering the 1970s

I was a member of the 48th Transportation Co,  while it was

located in Forest Park, GA, also known as the Atlanta Army Depot.

We were a heavy maintenance repair facility  of all reciprocal

helicopters from the OH-13 to the OH 37 (which was the biggest)

We deployed to German in the Fall of 1961 for what was called

the Berlin Build-up I was on a ship called the Darby a round

belly troop ship to a place call Mannheim, Germany .  We spent at

least a year under no transfer not leaves no dependent  travel.

I left the 48th in 1663 to come back to the States and instead

I was sent to Viet Nam for the first of three tours there.

I am sure that the German Crest above the 192nd patch is the one you are asking

about  The 48th Trans Co  We were called a Heavy Maintenance & Repair Co
