mdk0911 Posted August 13, 2015 Author Share #8 Posted August 13, 2015 Thx for the feedback !! - I thought it was good first generation with the peened tang at the pommel (next step of red spacer kabar after the welded and grounded smooth tang)
byf41 Posted August 13, 2015 Share #9 Posted August 13, 2015 Typically these gen 1 knives have a welded/ground pommel but Ive seen them peened also . Looks like an honest knife . Is the grip a full 5" ?
Catfishcraig Posted August 13, 2015 Share #10 Posted August 13, 2015 Congratulations on a very nice 1 gen Kabar. If you read this post by the late Greg Robinson you will find he made a reference to this particular variation with the peened pummel. http://www.usmilitariaforum.com/forums/index.php?/topic/480-red-spacer-usmc-ka-bar/ Craig
doyler Posted August 13, 2015 Share #11 Posted August 13, 2015 Agreed peened is just a variation.Speculation that its a factory thing where they hadnt standardized anything at this time. The welds were weak and tended to break easily and with the handlesgetting wet and swelling may cause issues as well.
