eric1913 Posted August 10, 2015 Share #1 Posted August 10, 2015 Dear forum members, I would like to know how to tell a WWI Coast Guard uniform from Navy and post WWI Coast Guard uniforms. Thank you for your help.
Navybean Posted August 31, 2015 Share #2 Posted August 31, 2015 Do not the WW1 Coast Guard uniforms differ from USN by which sleeve they apply the eagle rating patch too? Navy on left USCG on the right.

sigsaye Posted August 31, 2015 Share #4 Posted August 31, 2015 Coast Guard has a shield on the right grow arm. USN rates were worn on either sleeve from 1833-1893 depending on job. From 1893-1905, they were worn on the sleeve that corresponded to your watch section (Port or Starboard) from 1905-1948, specific rates were worn on right sleeve ( BM GM QM SM FC TM MN), with all others on the left. After 1948, all Navy shifted to left sleeve. Not sure of dates, but CG followed this practice for some time
