I've never been to the Philippines but the pictures posted on this thread don't look anything like the way my father described it. He was on a Navy airfield on Mindoro with an ACORN unit. They lived in tents with wood plank floors. The Army "Jolly Rogers" B-24's were on their field because it had a longer runway than the AAF field and they lived in tents with no wood plank floors. When the war ended, he said that they destroyed most of their equipment and went to Manila to get ships home. Manila Bay was full of sunken ships. Photo of Arthur Brown on Mindoro in July 1945.

Sgt. BARney

Salvage Sailor - excellent thread! I was there several times between 1980-83. San Miguel beer (warm), Purple Haze (in plastic jugs), balut, BBQ chicken feet, monkey-on-a-stick, "You pay me bar fine"...

Some great(?) times. I remember the restrooms in the bars along $hit River - you look down the hole and just see the river flowing by underneath!

My younger brother was on the Coral Sea one time while my unit was there. I went over to his ship when we got liberty, but they said he had already left. Later that night we ran into each other in Olangapo. A great reunion - got a picture of it somewhere. Also saw two friends from high school there, both sailors. One of them got married there, but said he had it annulled back on base.

We pulled in there once while on float out of Okinawa. Had a buddy who fell in love over the course of a couple days. He said he was going to bring his girl on base, take her to the PX and buy her a refrigerator. He then planned to marry her and go UA (AWOL). We did not let him leave the ship until we pulled out.

Wow - the memories.

If you were ever in Po city you know where it was. We had one in Angeles, outside Clark. This is a larger patch and not one of the remakes on eBay.Posted Image

Not patches but I think these are relevant to this great thread.

PI hand-made badges. First one is Cubi Pt. and the second one is for Sangley Point.

A couple of patches I picked up.

I belonged to the Aqua Falcons when I was at Clark. Got all my snorkeling supplies there.

It maintained a constant commitment to provide Special Boat Detachments (SBDs) to NSWU-1/MST-3 Subic Bay P.I. as well as ARGs supporting NSW operations deployed in the Western Pacific. In 1982 SBU-12 took delivery of its first SEAFOX (SWCL) to replace the aging LCPLs as the prime SEAL support craft on ARG deployments, and to MST-3. SBU-12 would deploy 2 MKIII PBs to support NSW ops.
