northcoastaero Posted June 30, 2015 Share #5 Posted June 30, 2015 The first helmet could be a Soviet/Russian, Polish, etc. aviation ground support helmet? The second helmet is an APH-6C for use with the Gentex 3 piece dual visor kit. Size medium or large. The metal clip on the left side is for a MS-22001 oxygen mask high pressure hose on which the Robertshaw Type 1 mini-regulator was mounted to the mask face piece instead of the chest area. The high pressure hose ran over the left shoulder and then to the oxygen hose on the upper block of the Rigid Seat Survival Kit (RSSK) used in the USN/USMC McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom II or the USN RA-5C Vigilante aircraft. The F-4 used the RSSK-1 and RSSK-1A and the RA-5C used the RSSK-2. Most likely 1968 era? There was a transition to the Martin-Baker MK-H5 to the MK-H7 zero-zero ejection seat in 1968. The seat would probably be the MK-H5 if the helmet was from an F-4 aircraft. Usually the fighter aircraft prefer the single visor assy. on the flight helmet. I have seen many photos of RA-5C acft. crews using the dual visor helmets. The seats used in the RA-5C were the North American HS-1 and HS-1A. The APH-6C helmet was either manufactured as an APH-6C (dual visor/plastic ear cups) or upgraded from an APH-6B (dual visor/foam, leather ear cups) or APH-6A (single visor/foam-leather ear cups). My guess is that the helmet was upgraded from an APH-6B because of the earlier (taller not tapered back) earphone elements. This helmet shell has a two piece Styrofoam liner which I have seen with the APH-6C, D, and Gentex APH-6B. The APH-6, APH-6A, Sierra APH-6B used a three piece Styrofoam liner. To make a long story short, your helmet shell is most likely a 1968 era Gentex APH-6B modified to a Gentex APH-6C configuration by life support and used by a pilot or RIO in the USN/USMC F-4 aircraft or a pilot or RAN (Radar Attack Navigator) in the USN RA-5C Vigilante aircraft.
