Aeronautical blades

As with many here I have an affliction but geared towards fixed edged implements of Army and Navy aeronautical use. This is the bulk of my USAAF display board of known patterns to have been procured and issued by them. The folding machetes and others are with kits around the room.

Very nice. Do you have the other two Culver machete configurations?

Also, is the "early" AAC bone-handled knife plated? I recently obtained one, but thought it might just be a hunting knife rather than AAC due to the bright blade.

I do not have the other two variations of the Collins/Cruver machetes, the one I have is certainly the most common of the three and I don't think I have ever had the opportunity to purchase the other two types either.

Some easy tips on determining whether or not it is the AAC type is ....does it have a 5" blade? Is the guard and handle pins (2) steel? not brass, if you answered yes to both then it is the AAC knife.

Great knife's. I'm still looking for the 5665 with the bone handle, and the transitional knife with the earlier 5679 fullered blade. Does anyone know if the number for the knife changed when they switched to the saber ground blade?

Cruver... Of course -- I think Culver is a restaurant... They are very unusual machetes, and hard to find.

Yes to all three questions on the Camillus, so I guess it was a good pickup.

Thanks,

Jim

This is the Navy section. I have been casually looking for the right baby shark and a MK-1 either a leather sheath Camillus or a PAL RH-34 to round that section off.

I have made some observations with the sheaths. The overall construction are identical with both the 5665 and 5679 but I have found that the sheaths for the earlier 5665 have a smooth domed snap versus a rim pattern on the 5679 sheaths. Also I have found that for the 5679 it is a very snug fit were you almost have to cram it in the sheath but with the patterned snap sheaths it glides right in.

Trzaska notes that model as the 5679 L36A with production commencing in March 1943. The other two are the 5679 L36

Dustin;

I think I have a "baby shark"somewhere.

Also: are you looking for a PAL RH 35 OR RH 34?

I'm still looking for a WESTERN Bowie....missed 2 in the last year or so, darnit.

Will try to take a picture of the CRUVER sq. tip for you...not mint but holds a place till I find another.

Very nice. Groupings are great when you can see the progressional changes as well as the variances between manufacturers. Thanks for sharing the thread.
