Pair of Trench Art Pieces

Got my hands on these at the Nashville monthly flea market.

They're both damned heavy.

This first one is nicely shined, and well-made. The upper carry handle pivots smoothly. Dated 1944 on the bottom of the shell.

This is the second piece, which my wife insists is a candle holder (I still say ashtray ... maybe a hybrid of both).

While not as polished as the other piece, I love that its made up of different caliber shells.

While I'm not certain that this is a piece of trench art, I did pick up this (I believe) salt shaker with "Camp Dodge" etched on it. Camp Dodge was in Johnston, Iowa.

Nice Bryan

The Camp Dodge piece is most likely a WW1 piece. They were a large training base in WW1 and home of the 88th Division there. These came in sets of a salt and peper shaker set.I have a couple as well but dont recall the Camps. My dad was a colector of trench art and when he passed away I bought his collection of trench art at auction.

I have seen Camp Grant,Camp Shelby,Camp Custer and a few others as shaker sets.

I would say that the second piece is definitely an ashtray, and a very cool one at that. Perhaps the "candle holder" might have held matches?

You know, that's a good observation! I'll bring it to her attention. She, of course, will say that you and I are both wrong!
