bellasilva Posted June 2, 2015 Share #1 Posted June 2, 2015 After a long, long time of searching for D-Day related dog tags, I decides to put up a wanted ad here on the forum. Out of boredom, I started searching ebay for dog tags. I came across this pair and decided to do a Google search as the last name seed rather unique. I immediately came upon a website where the son of the veteran listed his service information, showing Normandy as one of the campaign credits of his unit, the 3820th Quartermaster Gas Supply Company. A little bit of research and I found that the 3820th landed on Omaha on June 6th-7th in support of the 29th Infantry Division. Gahhh! I nearly broke my fingers hitting the "buy it now" button. I also came across a site detailing a 3820th veteran's experiences during the landings. Some of them were recruited by Graves Registration to help dig the temporary graves for the guys killed on the beach. Pretty sobering stuff. Anyway, I'm in that state of ecstasy some of us know when we find our holy grail items, and this is one of them. He also served at the Battle of the Bulge by the way..and normally I don't like to celebrate before I receive an item but I just couldn't wait..anyway, enjoy!! Cap Camouflage Pattern I Posted June 2, 2015 Share #4 Posted June 2, 2015 Don't celebrate or even talk about it before you get it, you never know who has friends in the postal service. Seriously nice find.
bellasilva Posted June 3, 2015 Author Share #5 Posted June 3, 2015 Thanks guys, absolutely can't wait to get these in hand. It's been an on and off dream of mine since 1998 to get my hands on a set like this, more so in the past couple of years. Connor located a site for me with a 3820th veterans recollection of their landing, apparently at the Easy Red Sector, all the shelling they endured, the dead bodies of American soldiers strewn about..amazing stuff. Wharfmaster Posted June 3, 2015 Share #14 Posted June 3, 2015 Fantastic find, good for you. Grail item indeed. Just curious, why didn't you post this in the Dog Tag/ID section where the dog tag collectors hang out ? Would be nice to keep all the great dog tags in one place. bellasilva Posted June 3, 2015 Author Share #15 Posted June 3, 2015 Thanks gents! Wharf- in my excitement I'm surprised I didn't post them in the new member introductions but I'll be sure to post it in the Normandy dog tag section. DNADave - While I'm sure if any family is still around they'd be happy to have the tags, there's been extensive discussion here on the forum regarding returning items to family members. I personally feel that the reason the tags may have turned up for sale was that someone in the family very well could have put them up for sale themselves. I've returned two items to the vets themselves in the past but I tend to keep my items. These tags will be on display with approximately 100 other tags, some to servicemen who were wounded in combat, fought in the bloodiest campaigns in American history, awarded Silver Stars, etc. They'll be an honored and treasured addition to my collection. bellasilva Posted June 11, 2015 Author Share #25 Posted June 11, 2015 Just found this picture of some of the men of the 3820th Quartermaster Gas Supply Company at work in La Cambe, France in 1944. Looks like they had their hands full that day
