Don't know much about buttons. I was wondering what era this South Carolina button was? Is it a State Militia type button?

Post Civil War. SC state seal with Superior Quality backmark. Late 1800's. Could have been state militia or state official.

Images for reference:

1) left, original Civil War Era; right, modern reproduction.

2) reverses of above buttons.

South Carolina buttons have been standard on uniforms worn by cadets at The Citadel subsequent to its establishment in 1842.  Also worn by members of the South Carolina Uniformed Militia, many of whom were Citadel professors.  South Carolina regiments wore these buttons during the Civil War and for some time afterwards.
