Brig Posted May 29, 2015 Author Share #4 Posted May 29, 2015 SUPERB, got a name for the Cpl? "Frank Stratton Co D" 1896-98 is all that's on the rolls, Cpl in 97-98. Sgt in 98. Stationed at Marine Barracks Washington DC, USS Brooklyn, USS Annapolis, Brooklyn Navy Yard, Navy Yard Porta NH, and Gitmo. And an entry for May 1898 with Co "D" 1st Bn at Camp Sampson, Key West, Florida which is probably around the time this photo was taken, I'm assuming

Brig Posted June 19, 2016 Author Share #12 Posted June 19, 2016 So interesting development in this one... Frank Stratton, went to Marine Barracks New York, then to sea a couple times. In November 1898, he returned to the New York Naval Yard as a Sergeant, and within 2 weeks is listed as a deserterIn 1904, a Fred Henry Sutton enlists out of Chicago, bounces around awhile, ultimately ending up at Gitmo before being transferred to New York Navy Yard in Dec 1906 as a Cpl. Within ten days in January he is listed as:1-28 confined awaiting action for fraudulent enlistment and desertion. 26th Reduced from Cpl to Pvt. 29th …confined 10 days for being under the influence of liquor in garrison. In February, he is listed as : 1-8 confined awaiting bad conduct discharge. Identified as Frank Stratton, Sgt, USMC, who deserted Marine Barracks NY Nov 3 1898 Anyone know how to find out more info on this? I know the archives don't like to release legal info to people who are not NOK. I am trying to figure out the nature of his confinement...was he confined to garrison? Or was he released and drunk within a day then confined again? How was he identified? He deserted the same station 8 years prior, I imagine if anyone identified him it was a civilian, as surely everyone would have rotated by then. How were such guys identified as former deserters? teufelhunde.ret Posted June 21, 2016 Share #14 Posted June 21, 2016 Superb picture, And IDed too, as good as it gets, are you pulling his record? You'll get answers to some of your questions...
Brig Posted June 21, 2016 Author Share #15 Posted June 21, 2016 I'll have to pull two records from two facilities...since one discharge happened pre-1905 and the other after. I will be digging more into him, to maybe solve the mystery. Pretty bold to come back into the same organization you deserted, when it was so small, and expect never to run into someone from the past. I run into Marines from my past almost weekly...and it's a much bigger organization these days
BEAST Posted June 21, 2016 Share #16 Posted June 21, 2016 Brig, That's a great image. I'm looking forward to reading more of your research.
Brig Posted June 21, 2016 Author Share #17 Posted June 21, 2016 By the way, narrowed this photo down to most likely April-May 1898...he still hadn't transitioned to the P96 cap, which is interesting, as he was at Marine Barracks Washington DC before that date, and one would imagine those guys would have gotten them fairly early
SgtMaddoxUSMC Posted June 21, 2016 Share #18 Posted June 21, 2016 Pretty funny that he missed it so much after he deserted that he tried to come back in! That's ballsy, especially with him ending up back in NY!
