Help identify unit and era please. The name of the soldier is R. Church. The outside of the cover has a stamp that reads "14 F". Under the flap there is a stamp that reads "S."

Any ideas what all this means? Can anyone identify it? There is not date stamped on back. THANK!

The cover is pre-WW1. The 14 is the regiment and the F is the company. The 8 refers to the soldiers number.

So the cover was issued to the 14th regiment (Infantry or Cavalry), Company F, soldier number 8.

Hope that helps.

Oh cool! What is the approx value of this hatchet? There is no price on it. Thanks for the help! Any way to find a list with his name on it?

Is the hatchet head marked "U.S."? The handle looks like it might be civilian. The cover is nice and the pre-war stuff usually goes for more than the WW1 issue gear. Tough to put a value on it.

I would conservatively say $50 for the cover. The hatchet, if it is marked, might add another $20. Again, I'm trying to be conservative.
