kanemono Posted May 22, 2015 Share #1 Posted May 22, 2015 Here is a leather scabbard used by USMC "Horse Marines " during patrol missions fighting Nicaraguan guerrillas. The Marines found the Thompson to be very effective for fighting in the thick jungle. The picture is from my book China Horse Marine. Click on picture for a larger image. Ronny67 Posted May 24, 2015 Share #3 Posted May 24, 2015 Actually I've read they didnt like it as much as the BAR, as the .45 round didnt brushbust as well as .30-06 This was one of the first uses of a Submachine gun by the USMC, and they were appreciative of its abilities. By this time, the USMC was issued the M1921 model, which had a faster rate of fire and was harder to control. The M1921 was heavy, and the .45 acp lacked serious jungle penetration potential, but the BAR was heavier and was limited by its 20rd magazine. Yes, the M1921 had flaws which were realized in the feild, but the USMC was happy to field the TSMGs. My source is Chesty Puller's biography, which details the Nicaraguan campaign. kanemono Posted May 25, 2015 Author Share #4 Posted May 25, 2015 There is a great picture of Chesty Puller with a Thompson during the Nicaraguan campaign. Here is an image from my book showing a rest during a patrol around Ocotal led by Lt Sol Levensky in the the Nicaraguan jungle. You can see the BAR. Click on the picture for a large image.
