kilgarvan Posted May 19, 2015 Share #1 Posted May 19, 2015 Came across this for 20 bucks. Figured at worst it would be a decent knife for my tackle box..... So, what caught my eye was the scabbard. To my very untrained eye, this looked to me like a theatre made Western knife in a Hitler youth style scabbard. A little rough but might clean up a bit. Opinions on this one? World War 2 era? Hitler youth scabbard? Would be a neat story if somebody did indeed use this type of scabbard with this.......am I way off here (I could very well be)... sactroop Posted May 19, 2015 Share #10 Posted May 19, 2015 Looks like a Western G46 pattern knife to me. What's the blade length. Also in the close up of the tang stamp it appears to me like the knife shows signs of plating.
kilgarvan Posted May 19, 2015 Author Share #11 Posted May 19, 2015 Thanks Lads. So, this is an original WW2 Hitler Youth scabbard. Is the knife also WW2 vintage? Would these have been private purchased? Theatre made / altered to fit the Hitler Youth scabbard? I assume fitting the knife to this scabbard is not something somebody would have done post war.....but, you never know. I'd assume this knife was made to fit the scabbard during WW2. Any additional thoughts welcomed. Value on this? How did I make out for $20? I'm glad I was able to notice the scabbard in the antique store...... kilgarvan Posted May 19, 2015 Author Share #12 Posted May 19, 2015 ....Ill measure the blade length tonight....if it is plated at the tang, what would that indicate? Thanks
kilgarvan Posted May 19, 2015 Author Share #13 Posted May 19, 2015 Blade length just under 5"
doyler Posted May 19, 2015 Share #14 Posted May 19, 2015 Would say its a post war hunting knife as it looks to say MADE IN USA. You may be able to narrow down the time frame by doing an on line search fo western blade markings.
Reeder3 Posted May 20, 2015 Share #15 Posted May 20, 2015 The HJ scabbard looks ok to me. Sell the scabbard separate from the knife. I'm sure there's a guy out there missing a scabbard. Never paid too much attention to the western knives.
doyler Posted May 20, 2015 Share #16 Posted May 20, 2015 I would agree a HJ scabbard but you have to remember the post war German Boy Scout knives and scabbard were basically the same and could be found for years. There were a subtle differance and changes in the grip snaps and scabbrd rivits for the strap. You may find some also marked Germany or made in Germany on the strap if they were exported.I have a repro HJ knife from the 70s and it has a marked strap. kilgarvan Posted May 20, 2015 Author Share #17 Posted May 20, 2015 Thanks guys. Kinda bummed the knife is most likely post war. I'll take a closer look and post some pics of the scabbard to try and figure out if it is a HJ scabbard of WW2 vintage. Thanks.
