V-E Day in Europe 1945

V-E Day in Europe (May7th, not May 8th) at the 107th Evacuation Hospital. They were set up on the banks of the Regan River in Regensburg, Germany when the surrender was signed at Reims on May 7th. This was my in-laws unit. The only one I can identify in the picture is on the extreme right. The Sgt with the big ears is Bob Knightly of Russell, MA, now deceased. One of a few local men drafted at the same time in this area that wound up in the same unit because they were in the same rail car when they got to Camp Blanding, FL and were "informed" that this car is now in the medical corps.

 

They had to treat several self-inflicted gun shot wounds while there by G.I.s celebrating by firing off rounds and playing with captured German weapons. Patton quickly put a stop to the celebrations.

 

Sorry for the quality. This is a picture of the picture. It's glued into the album and I did not want to risk damaging it.
