wwcollector90 Posted April 30, 2015 Share #1 Posted April 30, 2015 Hi all, this is not a super recent pick up but recent enough to be posted here I believe. This is my favorite blade in my collection. I picked this baby up at the Marietta Civil War Show about a year ago and am just getting around to posting it. It belonged to William Wilkerson who was a member of HQ Company 1st Bat 21st Rgmt. 3rd Marine Div. The dealer also had his very rare New Zealand made 21st Rgmt knife the kind that was modeled after the gungho knife. I didn't have the cash for that but managed to snag the KA-BAR. THe dealer also had his Cattaraugus Knife and it appeared to be the only knife Mr Wilkerson really used heavily. But anyway here are some pics I just took of the KA-BAR Hope yall enjoy Here is a link to a video of Mr. Wilkerson http://www.witnesstowar.org/combat_stories/WWII/4135 -John

wwcollector90 Posted April 30, 2015 Author Share #5 Posted April 30, 2015 What do you all think I should do about that corrosion on the rivets of the sheath.
doyler Posted April 30, 2015 Share #6 Posted April 30, 2015 Thats a beauty.Well preserved example.Would have loved to see the New Zealand knife. As for the rivits you may clean around them with a tooth pick if there is green verdigris showing on the leather.A old soft tooth brush may remove some of the corrosion residue but I would be careful and not over clean.A small dab of light oil or vegetable oil on the rivits after brushing may reduce further corrosion. 268th C.A. Posted April 30, 2015 Share #7 Posted April 30, 2015 I'd leave it alone!
Terry K. Posted April 30, 2015 Share #8 Posted April 30, 2015 If you leave it along it will eventually ruin the sheath. Please clean as doyler said

etienne Posted May 5, 2015 Share #11 Posted May 5, 2015 Hello, that's a very nice knife ... in addition to the identification of the Marine owner, the PAL original sheath is amazing and not so easy to find ! E

Costa Posted May 6, 2015 Share #14 Posted May 6, 2015 yes-- when ever you see that green crap on anything, get it off.
1SG_1st_Cav Posted May 6, 2015 Share #15 Posted May 6, 2015 I put some baking soda over the rivets, then drip white vinegar on them. The vinegar causes the baking soda to fizz, and it kills the verdigris. Then use a tooth brush to brush it off. I then apply some leather polish with lanolin. Then brush it with a clean shoe brush. Bellumbill Posted May 6, 2015 Share #16 Posted May 6, 2015 Very nice knife! I have a Pal/USMC kabar, though not as nice as yours, but alas not the "Pal" stamped scabbard! Excellent pick up, good luck cleaning it up! Thanks for posting - Like doyler, love to see the NZ knife! Very best, Bill K.
