If you are coming to Western New Mexico there is plenty to see and do. The Space Museum in Alamogordo, New Mexcio and the Trinity Site at White Sands Missile Range are both great places to visit.

Don't know what it is you are looking for, but those museums that Rakkasan187 mentioned make for interesting visits. White Sands Missile Range also has its own museum. If you are in that part of NM you might take the drive further down to El Paso, and check out the 1st Armored Div. Museum in Ft. Bliss. There is also the War Eagles Museum in Santa Teresa, NM. This is close to El Paso as well.

And to echo what Joe said, El Paso has some great museums. The El Paso Holocaust museum is a must see as well. The US Army NCO Heritage and Education Center (formerly the Museum of the Non Commissioned Officer) is located on Biggs Army Airfield at Fort Bliss as well as the 1 AD museum. There is also the Ft Bliss replica, a model of the post from the cavalry days on the frontier..

 

There is also a small military museum in Alamogordo New Mexico on the way up to Cloudcroft, New Mexico. It is a very impressive center, small but crammed full of uniforms and equipment and they have a great reference library as well..

I'm gonna have to check that one out!

 

I just remembered that there is a museum in Columbus, NM too, although somewhat out of the way. It has a lot of artifacts related to the Pancho Villa raid and the later Punitive Expedition led by Pershing.

As you go up the hill towards Cloudcroft on the right hand side there is a small white metal building, that is the WW2 memorial museum.. I will get the address and phone number for you and post it later...

 

From US 54 to Highway 82.. up the hill about 3/4 of the way on the right side... just before the Snake Pit surplus shop...

If your looking for real military surplus or want to go treasure hunting there are three places in Albuquerque.

 

First one is Jones Surplus Barn, Inc. Neat place, used to be a surplus store but now is being converted into a flea market kind of place. The place has all kinds of surplus from BDU's to tents, tools, hardware, etc and some antique items. Definitely worth a look. Parking lot is small so parking could be a problem. Only down side is everything is either marked or not marked as far as prices. So your left to guess what it is but ask before dropping some cash on an item. I have found some pretty awesome stuff for a few dollars. The staff there are sometimes nice, sometimes not and last time I visited the person checking me out was clueless as to what I was buying and was trying to over inflate the price, so you may have to haggle over an item. There are other vendors in there selling antiques, it be well worth the time to check them out.

 

Next, Kaufamn's West LLC, this is a more modern store. It's OK if you want police/ law enforcement/ camping gear, etc or paintball-airsoft gear. Prices are little on the steep side.

 

Lastly, Surplus City MRE's. This is just a block down the street from Jones Surplus Barn. Big warehouse operation with a spacious back lot that houses everything from X-ray machines to refrigerators to kitchen sinks (yep, kitchen sinks). Has a small parking lot, and prices are marked but fair. Does have surplus clothing, tools, hardware, novelty stuff, kinds of looks like if they purchase lots of stuff from the government and then try to re-sell back to the public. The folks running the front counter are nice and like to talk to you.
