Burning Hazard Posted April 25, 2015 Share #1 Posted April 25, 2015 Found this nice signal corps shot of a US tank crew in North Africa (~1942) and it's one of my favourites. Note the nice rayon liner visible held by one of the troopers; can't tell whether it's a high or low pressure but the distinct early square washers and fixed leather liner chinstrap are nicely visible. Grant G. Posted April 25, 2015 Share #5 Posted April 25, 2015 David beat me to it. Definitely a Westinghouse liner; notice the similarities between the pattern of the duck cloth.

GeneralCheese Posted April 25, 2015 Share #7 Posted April 25, 2015 It could also be a Seaman. They produced rayon liners for a very short time.
Grant G. Posted April 25, 2015 Share #8 Posted April 25, 2015 Seaman never produced rayon suspension high pressures. Only M.S.A., Westinghouse, and Inland. But, I'm curious, what's your source?

You're right, it was MSA, I was mistaken.
Burning Hazard Posted April 25, 2015 Author Share #10 Posted April 25, 2015 That's gotta be a Westinghouse, good eyes! MSA made rayon liners but I believe they only had the studs for the removable leather liner chinstraps, in the zoomed in photo you can see the bright, unpainted, riveted loop of a permanent liner chinstrap. Burning Hazard Posted April 25, 2015 Author Share #11 Posted April 25, 2015 Here's another one I found on http://www.90thidpg.us/Equipment/Reviews/NARayonSB/index.html This time it's a General Fiber or Hawley mfg liner, you can clearly see the snap in sweatband and early square washers. Grant G. Posted January 31, 2017 Share #13 Posted January 31, 2017 I stumbled upon this topic the other day and realized I never posted a photo of the liner I sold. This is probably the rarest helmet liner I have ever come across. It is an MSA with a rayon suspension, rectangular washers, and a stationary leather liner strap. This is the only one in this variation I have ever seen. Of the very few rayon MSA's that I have encountered, all but this one have had the later style A-washers and studs for the removable leather liner strap. It is so uncommon that it wasn't even mentioned in M-1 Helmets of the ETO as ever existing. I have been kicking myself ever since I sold this. Posted January 31, 2017 Share #15 Posted January 31, 2017 This just sold on ebay with a Rayon MSA liner: http://www.ebay.com/itm/112287106284 It's a salty looking one Jamie, it has A-washers, though, far more common than the rectangular washers. Burning Hazard Posted January 31, 2017 Author Share #16 Posted January 31, 2017 Nice MSA liner, a rare addition to us hardcore helmet collectors! Speaking of MSA liners, I have one that has web suspension with unpainted steel/aluminium A-washers, I've never seen another one like it, 99% of MSA liners out there are either OD or black A-washer late war types. GITom1944 Posted February 6, 2017 Share #20 Posted February 6, 2017 anyone see the other helmet to the left with the insignia on the side? The helmets used by 1st Armored Division tankers show the same markings as their tanks. http://www.usmilitariaforum.com/forums/index.php?/topic/130970-1st-armored-division-unit-markings/ Tom

Burning Hazard Posted February 10, 2017 Author Share #22 Posted February 10, 2017 Very interesting. I've seen the picture before but never noticed the rayon liner! Details are important This is why I love high resolution WW2 photos; I can spend hours scanning through them looking for the smallest details, you'd be surprised some of the things you can find. It's not in the best shape, though. http://www.ebay.com/itm/US-WW2-M1-HELMET-LINER-MINE-SAFETY-APPLIANCES-MSA-/192105211562?hash=item2cba5ce6aa:g:SCkAAOSw4CFYozSE
