historyrecovered Posted April 25, 2015 Share #1 Posted April 25, 2015 Hi all So I was being offered a purple heart with the smaller, but black box without the purple heart printed titlE. The inside bottom part is purple, with no space for hanging the medal or any other ribbons, with a latch or button to close it. The medal itself is a wrap around brooch, ..so my question is...am I to assume this is still a early 1940 purlpe heart or just a regular ww2 era PH with an older box? And what is the level of desirability/rarity of a early PH versus a genreal ww2 era heart ? The collector tells me definitely not world war one era.. No photos sorry have no way to get any until I have it
KASTAUFFER Posted April 25, 2015 Share #2 Posted April 25, 2015 It could be a WWII type II US Navy Purple Heart. Is it numbered? Kurt
historyrecovered Posted April 25, 2015 Author Share #3 Posted April 25, 2015 Not that I know of , but I know he said case was black versus the blue early ww1 era medals
KASTAUFFER Posted April 25, 2015 Share #4 Posted April 25, 2015 A Navy type II medal would be in a short titled black leatherette case. Kurt
historyrecovered Posted April 25, 2015 Author Share #5 Posted April 25, 2015 I, going to be honest I haven't a clue what short titled means. I hate to admit that but I'm here to learn ! That does sound right ..any idea on the level of rarity?
KASTAUFFER Posted April 25, 2015 Share #6 Posted April 25, 2015 If its a Navy Type II medal cased and not named, its a $250 medal. Kurt

KASTAUFFER Posted April 25, 2015 Share #8 Posted April 25, 2015 The US Navy titled cases ( they say PURPLE HEART on the lid) are shorter than Army cases from WWII . They also don't have a lip around the edge. Kurt
historyrecovered Posted April 25, 2015 Author Share #9 Posted April 25, 2015 This one has no writing on the lid though
historyrecovered Posted April 25, 2015 Author Share #10 Posted April 25, 2015 This one , being an earlier case I suppose , would t really loom like a PH case at first glance
KASTAUFFER Posted April 25, 2015 Share #11 Posted April 25, 2015 1930's Purple Hearts came in cardboard boxes. Without photos its really tough to help you. Kurt
historyrecovered Posted April 25, 2015 Author Share #12 Posted April 25, 2015 Hmm well closet thing I can find that reminds me of it , is the US PH domed case on Snyder Treasures he called it a domed latch PH case I'd put link but not sure if that's allowed
emccomas Posted April 25, 2015 Share #13 Posted April 25, 2015 Here are the pics of the "World War I Purple Domed Purple Heart Medal Case". I have a short untitled case that originally contained a Navy Type II Purple Heart, but I don't think that is what the OP is talking about. The OP may be referring to the pearl button black cases that were used in early WWII. However, I thought the inside of those cases was white, not purple. Puzzling.... KASTAUFFER Posted April 25, 2015 Share #14 Posted April 25, 2015 Nice case, but it's not for a Purple Heart. Kurt
