byf41 Posted April 20, 2015 Share #1 Posted April 20, 2015 Just picked this up at an estate sale . Missed his M1 helmet by an eyelash complete with rank Insignia and unit marked . He was a WWII and Korean war vet . I was wanting to know if this hat can be dated . It appears to have the reinforcement plate so I figured late WWII or maybe 1950's ? Also wonder if any other Information is available on this guy . Seller stated he later worked for a spy agency so I dont know if he was OSS or what . Thoughts or opinions welcome . Thanks guys . KurtA Posted April 20, 2015 Share #7 Posted April 20, 2015 The oldest it can be is 1956, as that when the Army Green uniform started to be worn.
Longbranch Posted April 21, 2015 Share #8 Posted April 21, 2015 What additional info are you wanting? Did you throw his name into a search engine like Google? Quite literally, the first thing that pops up is fairly informative obituary for a veteran by this same name, whose service history matches up perfectly: http://www.legacy.com/obituaries/sfgate/obituary.aspx?pid=163218876 And another source of info: http://patch.com/rhode-island/narragansett/kingston-native-honored-with-congressional-tribute In the future, providing more information (such as the general location of where the hat was found) is very helpful to people trying to assist you with basic info. Nice cap, and with some interesting history!!! Looks like he was retired by 1962, which gives you a nice time-frame for when he wore this cap (1956-1962). mdk0911 Posted May 6, 2015 Share #11 Posted May 6, 2015 Thanks for the info you all - I agree I should have given more info upfront. Purchased this from a memebr here byf41 (Craig) and the hat was found in California and purchased by byf41 and then me. He also said his M1 was avaiable but he didn't get it or was outbid? - would have been cool to get both but I'm happy with this beauty. Thx again Criag!!
