1st / 28th Infantry Recon ERDL JJ

Hi,

Thought I'd share some more jungle jackets that I recently rediscovered in a crate of JJ's.

Here's a 1st I.D. / 28th. Infantry Regt. ERDL jungle jacket. Sadly the name tape, SSI and one of the SGT. patches were removed.

But the Black Lions pocket patch, Recon tab, Sgt. and US Army tape remains. This jacket was altered by it's owner with the length being shortened and the pockets raised. This was found about 12 years ago in a vintage shop. Needless to say I was a happy camper that day.

Cheers,

Matt

Great jacket! 100% brothers. Wonder if it's the same guy? Weird how they/he striped both the SSI and Sgt. stripes on both jj's. Recon was usually just a platoon within the company so pretty small muster. What's the name tape read? You find any info on him?

Cap Camouflage Pattern I

https://army.togetherweserved.com/army/servlet/tws.webapp.WebApps?cmd=ShadowBoxProfile&type=Person&ID=65425

at the bottom of this page a man named Larry Mote said he served in Bravo, and Recon, 1st Battalion 28th Infantry regiment, 1st Infantry Division

edit: he's on this page, listed as SGT! https://army.togetherweserved.com/army/servlet/tws.webapp.WebApp?cmd=ShadowBoxProfile&type=AssignmentExt&ID=446837

edit2: on this page: http://www.vvmf.org/Wall-of-Faces/24013/STEVEN-D-HOOPER

Larry Mote says he served in Bravo Co, 1st Bat, 28th Ir, 1st ID and it has the email [email protected] I assume T is his middle initial and he wasn't a Lieutenant. The comment is almost 6 years old so he might not use that email anymore but it's worth a shot if you want to try and contact him.

heres another website he used that same email on, the T is his middle initial, his middle name is Thurston.

He was 65 in 2005 so he is 78 now.

There is an address on there but since it is 13 years old it could easily be out of date.

as late as 2010 he lived at that address

Note that the pocket patch, being theater made, was specifically made so that the number "1" is embroidered at an angle to the shield and lion so that the patch would be oriented at an angle when sewed on the slanted pocket of the jungle jacket while the number "1" appears vertical when the jacket is worn. It's a small detail, but I'm assuming it wasn't accidental and I don't think I've ever seen the number that way on examples of this patch I have owned or in other photos I have seen.

Compare it to these samples from a topic I started on 1st Infantry Division pocket patches worn in Vietnam.

Excellent observation, I didn't notice that, I don't collect variations of the patch but an excellent detail to be referenced.
