M1Garandy Posted April 6, 2015 Share #1 Posted April 6, 2015 Do any parts for the M3 knife exist? In this case, I'm looking for a crossguard and a pommel. I've seen demils of just about every other common WWII or later US blade but I don't think I've ever seen a demilled M3. Am I wasting my time looking for something that isn't out there? Thanks. Morlok Posted April 6, 2015 Share #2 Posted April 6, 2015 I saw a few original pommels on eBay quite some time ago. May be worth looking for a cheapo with rotten or missing washers & a awful blade. I see them on eBay now & then for dirt cheap. I have removed the parts from one in the past in order to restore a nice Case. The blade was broken, but I removed the pommel, carefully removed the washers & kept them in order by putting each on a long nail the same way I removed them. Then removed the cross guard. I reassembled on the Case, dipping each leather washer in neatsfoot oil. After peeling the pommel, the washers sucked up the oil & swelled up tight as new over night! Of course, I have a machine shop & lots of tools, thanks to my Grandfather. It makes these jobs much easier! A vice is a must have for removing a peened pommel. Sandwich the blade between 2 pieces of 2x4 & put in the vice. That will keep from damaging the blade!
M1Garandy Posted April 6, 2015 Author Share #3 Posted April 6, 2015 I've been searcing for parts or a broken/beater knife and have not yet had any luck. I have a feeling I'll be making my own someday.
Morlok Posted April 6, 2015 Share #4 Posted April 6, 2015 Sent you a link to one that won't break he bank. Looks like the leather washers were changed or smoothed out, and the blade was shortened. Probably broke at some point. Pommel & guard look good though! Just a heads up...if I see any more that are cheaper, I'll let you know!!
